PERFORMANCE REVIEWS
I want to recommend Ernie Hawkins. He was here last
night for the 3rd time. It doesn't get much more authentic
than Ernie. I recommend him highly. Also one of the
nicest, easiest guys to work with. Ernie is a gift. Mark

Fans of acoustic blues were treated to a wonderful performance
by Ernie Hawkins at the Folklore Society of Washington
DC. In addition to his fluid, crisp guitar playing, Hawkins
had a genial style in introducing his songs and a natural
vocal delivery. His wonderful performance and his extensive
repertoire made this a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable
concert. Ron Weinstock Washington DC Blues Society
The entire weekend was very successful (workshop and
concert). The Saturday night crowd loved Ernie! Our patrons
are still talking about the performance. Ernie and Nancy
are a pleasure to work with.

I want to thank you for conducting an enlightening workshop
and putting on an outstanding show at the Beachland
Ballroom in Cleveland Ohio. There was great karma
enjoyed by all. You are a wonderful guest as well. Thanks
a million. Amy Shahinian
Lucky folks got to hear this extraordinary blues artist
in an intimate and acoustically pristine setting. He made
a convincing case for nomination as a national cultural
treasure. Hawkins is clearly the real McCoy.

The audience at the New Horizon Hall gave Ernie Hawkins
the only full house standing ovation that I have seen.
He infused the audience with a blend of personal experience
and acoustic Blues that was passed on to him directly
from some of the original masters like Rev. Gary Davis,
Son House and Mississippi Fred McDowell, to name a few.
It was inspiring to here the base, middle and treble voices
of the guitar so cleanly woven into a fabric of time gone
by. A time gone by...but always present to the listener.
Ernie Hawkins is a man with a mission. He is a disciple
of a form of Blues nearly lost in our times, that of the
Piedmont style of guitar. Its complexity and beauty has
a direct African link that speaks directly from and to
the soul. We have been most fortunate on Hornby to be
witness to virtuosity. Ernie has reminded us that Blues
is not just an electric bar scene experience. It was born
in the country by people who lifted their heads above
their problems and drew from their roots, flowered and
spread the seed of Blues. We thank Ernie for his teachings
and feel that the spirit of Rev. Gary Davis and his peers
was well passed on.
